Spotted-Tail Quoll

Conservation Status: Near Threatened

Meet the Spotted-Tailed Quoll

The Spotted-Tailed Quoll (Dasyurus maculatus) is one of Australia’s most striking predators. Recognisable by its chocolate-brown coat scattered with bright white spots, right down its long tail, this powerful carnivorous marsupial is the largest quoll species and the only one with a spotted tail. Males can weigh up to 5kg, with females generally smaller, but both are agile climbers, strong diggers, and lightning-fast hunters.

As a top native predator, the Spotted-Tailed Quoll plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, controlling populations of small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Mostly nocturnal, they roam through forests, woodlands, and coastal heath at night, using their keen senses to locate prey. Solitary by nature, they fiercely defend their territories, with ranges that can stretch over several kilometres.

Did you know?

  • The Spotted-Tailed Quoll is the largest marsupial carnivore on mainland Australia since the extinction of the Thylacine.
  • They can leap more than a metre in a single bound to catch prey.
  • Quolls have a powerful bite and can take down animals larger than themselves, including possums and rabbits.

Why They’re at Risk

  • Habitat Loss & Fragmentation: Clearing for agriculture, urban development, and infrastructure projects has destroyed and broken up the dense forests and woodlands quolls depend on. Fragmented habitats make it harder for them to hunt, breed, and find shelter, while also forcing them to cross dangerous open ground.
  • Introduced Predators: Foxes and feral cats not only compete for food but also prey on young quolls. These invasive species have adapted exceptionally well to Australia’s environment, becoming highly effective predators.
  • Vehicle Strikes: Nocturnal movement between fragmented habitats often forces quolls to cross the road, making them highly vulnerable to collisions.
  • Persecution: In some areas, quolls have historically been targeted by landholders due to perceived threats to poultry, although this is far less common today.

Aussie Ark’s Conservation Work

Aussie Ark is taking action to secure a future for the Spotted-Tailed Quoll, one of Australia’s most remarkable native predators.

  • Predator-Free Breeding & Release Sites: We are establishing secure, predator-proof sanctuaries where Spotted-Tailed Quolls can live, breed, and hunt without the threat or competition of foxes and cats.
  • Research & Monitoring: Using camera traps and on-the-ground surveys, we track quoll behaviour, survival rates, and habitat use. This data guides adaptive management and ensures that our conservation strategies are as effective as possible.
  • Habitat Protection: We restore and protect forested areas to provide quolls with suitable den sites, hunting grounds, and safe passageways between territories.

Through these efforts, Aussie Ark is giving the Spotted-Tailed Quoll the protection it needs to thrive and reclaim its vital role in Australia’s ecosystems.
