Rufous Bettong

Rufous Bettong

Conservation Status: Vulnerable

Meet the Rufous Bettong

The Rufous Bettong (Aepyprymnus rufescens), sometimes called the rufous rat-kangaroo, is a small but remarkable nocturnal marsupial about the size of a rabbit. With large, alert ears, a long-tapered snout, and a sleek, reddish-brown coat, it is often mistaken for a large rodent or a young kangaroo. Once widespread across the grassy woodlands and open forests of eastern Australia, its range has contracted significantly due to habitat loss and introduced predators.

Despite its modest size, the Rufous Bettong is an ecological powerhouse. Acting as both a seed disperser and soil engineer, it plays a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Its constant digging aerates the soil, helps recycle nutrients, and creates perfect conditions for native plants to germinate. By foraging on fungi, roots, and tubers, it also supports mycorrhizal networks, which are essential for forest and woodland health.

Did you know?

  • Rufous Bettongs build grass-lined nests in shallow depressions, which they use for shelter during the day.
  • They are one of the few marsupials to regularly cache food, hiding items such as tubers to eat later.
  • Their digging activities can turn over several tonnes of soil per animal each year - making them key drivers of soil health.

Why They're At Risk

  • Habitat Loss & Fragmentation: Clearing for agriculture, grazing, and urban development has destroyed much of the grassland and woodland habitat the Rufous Bettong depends on. Fragmentation isolates populations, reducing genetic diversity and limiting breeding opportunities.
  • Introduced Predators: Foxes and feral cats prey heavily on bettongs, especially juveniles and smaller adults, driving many local populations to extinction.
  • Competition from Introduced Herbivores: Rabbits, livestock, and deer compete for food and trample vegetation, further degrading bettong habitat.
  • Inappropriate Fire Regimes: Frequent or intense fires strip away dense ground cover, removing essential shelter and food sources. Fires during breeding season can be especially devastating.

Other Threats: Vehicle strikes, disease outbreaks, and the impacts of climate change, such as altered rainfall patterns and extreme weather events, further challenge the species’ survival.

Aussie Ark's Conservation Work

Aussie Ark is working to bring back the Rufous Bettong, a small but vital ecosystem engineer that helps keep Australia’s landscapes healthy.

  • Predator-Free Sanctuaries: We have established secure, fenced habitats where Rufous Bettongs can live and breed without the threat of foxes and cats.
  • Insurance Breeding Population: Our managed breeding program ensures a genetically healthy population ready for release into safe wild areas.
  • Habitat Restoration: We restore and manage native vegetation to provide ideal foraging and shelter conditions for bettongs.
  • Wild Releases: Once populations in our sanctuaries are stable, we reintroduce Rufous Bettongs into secure, managed wild areas to boost their presence across their historic range.

Through these efforts, Aussie Ark is restoring the Rufous Bettong to its rightful place in the wild and helping to rebuild healthier, more resilient ecosystems.
