Scotch Broom

Bringing Balance Back to the Bush

Restoring habitats so native wildlife can thrive

Invasive weeds crowd out native plants, degrade habitat, and increase fire risk. Our War on Weeds program targets high-priority species across our sanctuaries to restore healthy ecosystems for Koalas, Tasmanian Devils, Eastern Quolls, Greater Gliders, Brush-tailed Rock-wallabies and more.

Weeds alter soil, shade out seedlings, and choke waterways. Left unchecked, they transform living landscapes into monocultures with little food or shelter for native animals.

The War on Weeds combines on-ground removal, targeted herbicide work, manual and mechanical control, and follow-up revegetation to bring country back to life.

Why This Matters

Invasive weeds are one of the silent drivers of Australia’s biodiversity crisis. They smother native plants, alter soils, and transform healthy habitats into lifeless monocultures. Left unchecked, they strip away food sources, destroy shelter, and increase the risk of devastating fires. By tackling weeds head-on, Aussie Ark is restoring balance to our sanctuaries, giving native plants and animals the chance to recover and thrive.

  • Habitat quality: Native plants provide food, shelter and nesting hollows. Weeds do not.
  • Fire risk: Dense weed thickets act as ladders for fire. Reducing fuel loads protects wildlife and people.
  • Biodiversity: When weeds dominate, native plant diversity crashes, and so do insects, birds and mammals that depend on them.
  • Long-term resilience: Ongoing weed control plus revegetation rebuilds ecosystems that can withstand drought, fire and climate extremes.

Proven Success

Aussie Ark has already demonstrated the power of focused weed control. At several of our sanctuaries, Scotch Broom has been successfully eradicated, restoring groundcover and allowing native understory species to regenerate. This achievement proves that with the right tools and persistence, even large-scale infestations can be brought under control.

What We’re Doing

  • Survey and mapping: Seasonal surveys and drone and ground truthing to locate infestations and prioritise control.
  • Targeted control: Dispersion of Gall Mite (for Scotch Broom), cut-and-paint, drill-and-fill, selective herbicides, mechanical removal and follow-up sweeps to stop regrowth.
  • Revegetation: Direct seeding and tube-stock planting of locally native species to out-compete weeds and stabilise soils.
  • Track and fence maintenance: Access tracks and fence lines are kept clear to reduce seed spread and enable rapid response.
  • Biosecurity hygiene: Boot, vehicle, and equipment clean-down to prevent new incursions.
