Tasmanian Devils in Aussie Ark's Eco Sanctuary

About the Eco Sanctuary

A Safehaven for Wildlife and a Peaceful Home for Retired Animals

The Eco Sanctuary is a 75-hectare feral-free reserve that borders Aussie Ark’s Species Recovery Unit. It was the very first sanctuary Aussie Ark acquired and fenced, laying the foundation for the network of sanctuaries that now defines our conservation model.

Today, the Eco Sanctuary serves two important roles. It provides a safe and natural home for retired Tasmanian Devils and Eastern Quolls from our breeding programs, animals that have played their part in securing the future of their species. It also acts as a refuge for the native wildlife of the Barrington Tops, from wallabies and gliders to birdlife and reptiles, all thriving in a protected, predator-free landscape.

Why This Sanctuary Matters

Australia’s wildlife faces enormous pressure from introduced predators like feral cats and foxes. Sanctuaries like the Eco Sanctuary offer a glimpse of what the landscape once was — alive with native animals, safe from invasive threats.

The Eco Sanctuary is more than just a retirement home for Devils and Quolls. It’s proof of concept: that when we remove feral predators, native ecosystems begin to heal. Every hectare of the sanctuary supports a growing abundance of wildlife, from vulnerable marsupials to endangered birds and reptiles.

As Aussie Ark’s first sanctuary, the Eco Sanctuary paved the way for the larger Barrington, Curricabark, and Yindi sanctuaries. It continues to demonstrate how even smaller, protected landscapes play a vital role in securing the future for Australia’s unique species.
