About This Sanctuary

Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary, established by Aussie Ark, spans 400 hectares of pristine wilderness in the Barrington Tops region. This sanctuary is a vital stronghold in the fight against Australia’s extinction crisis, offering a safe haven for endangered native species. With a diverse landscape of open forests and grasslands, it provides a predator-free utopia, where wildlife can thrive without the threats of feral predators, noxious weeds, and habitat destruction.

As one of the largest protected areas of its kind, Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary serves as a critical refuge for Australia's most vulnerable species. The sanctuary is central to Aussie Ark’s rewilding efforts, aimed at restoring ecosystems and rebuilding populations of species that have vanished from the landscape.

What Aussie Ark Is Doing

Aussie Ark’s work within the Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary focuses on habitat restoration and species reintroductions, ensuring that native animals have the conditions they need to flourish. The sanctuary’s protective fencing was completed in November 2019, and feral predators, including cats and foxes, were removed, eliminating key threats to local wildlife.

While the sanctuary was officially opened in November 2020, reintroductions have been ongoing, with numerous animals released over the past few years. A major milestone came with the first-ever introduction of Tasmanian devils to mainland Australia in 2020. Aussie Ark celebrated this achievement with the release of Lisa and Lenny, two devils, into the wild - an event made even more special by actors Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky personally releasing the devils. Since that release, 21 additional adult devils have been released, and 16 joeys have been born, highlighting the sanctuary’s success in providing the environment necessary for species to thrive and rebuild their populations.

Aussie Ark remains committed to securing the future of Australia’s threatened wildlife and continues its ambitious rewilding efforts, working to restore the ecological balance of the Barrington Tops by returning species that once played a vital role in the region’s ecosystem.
