About This Sanctuary

The Mongo Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Upper Mongogarie, New South Wales, is a new 1,500-hectare wildlife refuge secured for conservation by Aussie Ark, WildArk, Re:Wild and the Australian Reptile Park. Situated about 30 km from the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Mallanganee National Park and 70 km from the Richmond Range National Park, this sanctuary is one of Australia’s most biodiverse regions. Its unique vegetation supports a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs, and invertebrates, making it an essential habitat for wildlife conservation.

The vision for Mongo Valley Wildlife Sanctuary includes transforming the property into a feral-free haven, providing a safe space for the return of endangered Australian species. The sanctuary will be modelled after Aussie Ark’s successful Wildlife Sanctuary in Barrington Tops, New South Wales, which has demonstrated outstanding success in wildlife restoration.

The Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary has already achieved remarkable milestones, such as successfully reintroducing the Eastern Quoll and Tasmanian Devil—two species once extinct on the mainland. Both species have since bred successfully in the wild, proving the effectiveness of protected sanctuaries in restoring endangered wildlife.

“The procurement of Mongo Valley Wildlife Sanctuary and its transformation into a wildlife refuge is just another step in the right direction for Australian wildlife. It offers a huge opportunity for wildlife conservation”

– Tim Faulkner, Aussie Ark President

What Aussie Ark Is Doing

Teams from Aussie Ark, WildArk, and the Australian Reptile Park have been actively visiting the Mongo Valley Wildlife Sanctuary to conduct wildlife surveys, initiate weed management programs, and begin preparations for the construction of a feral predator-proof fence. These early efforts are crucial to ensuring the sanctuary’s success and its role in wildlife conservation.

With the property secured, the next steps include building the fence to protect against feral predators like foxes and cats, which threaten native wildlife. In addition to predator control, the teams will focus on tackling invasive noxious weeds, implementing fire management strategies to reduce bushfire risks, and undertaking tree-planting initiatives to restore and enhance the sanctuary’s natural habitat.

The sanctuary’s rich biodiversity and ecological significance make it a vital asset for wildlife protection. Safeguarding wild places like Mongo Valley is key to combating climate change, preventing species extinction, and ensuring the long-term preservation of Australia’s unique wildlife.
