About This Species

The Long-Nosed Potoroo (Potorous tridactylus) is a small, nocturnal marsupial found in the forests of South Eastern Australia. Recognised by its slender body, large ears, and long, pointed nose, this species typically weighs between 0.8-1.5kg. With its dense fur that ranges from grey to brown, the Long-Nosed Potoroo is a skilled forager, primarily feeding on fungi, invertebrates, and plant matter. Long-Nosed Potoroos are ecosystem engineers as they are constantly digging for their food and helping to turnover fresh soil – this makes them vital to a healthy bushland habitat.

Threats They Face

Like many Australian marsupials, Long-Nosed Potoroos have faced population declines due to several key threats:

  • Habitat Loss and Fragmentation: The Long-Nosed Potoroo has experienced significant habitat loss due to land clearing for agriculture, urban development, and logging. These activities have led to the destruction of the dense forests and heathlands that the Potoroo relies on for shelter, foraging, and breeding. Fragmentation of these habitats further isolates populations, making it harder for potoroos to find suitable mates and disperse, which has contributed to their population decline.

  • Introduced Species: Introduced predators, such as foxes and cats, are a major threat to the Long-Nosed Potoroo. These predators hunt and kill Potoroos, particularly young or vulnerable individuals. Additionally, competition from introduced species for food and shelter, such as rabbits and deer, has reduced the availability of resources for potoroos. This has compounded the difficulties the species faces in maintaining healthy populations.

  • Inappropriate Fire Regimes: Frequent and intense fires, often caused by human activities or due to climate change, disrupt the habitat of the Long-Nosed Potoroo. These fires can destroy the dense ground cover and vegetation that provides essential protection and food sources. Furthermore, if fires occur during breeding seasons, they can directly harm individuals and damage vital habitats, making it difficult for the Potoroo to recover in the aftermath.

  • Other Threats: In addition to habitat loss, introduced predators, and fire regimes, the Long-Nosed Potoroo faces threats from vehicle collisions, especially when crossing roads in fragmented landscapes.

How Aussie Ark Is Helping

Aussie Ark is actively working to conserve the Long-Nosed Potoroo through a range of targeted initiatives. Establishing predator-free environments, and breeding programs, Aussie Ark aims to help increase the population and genetic diversity of this important species.

  • Establishing an Insurance Population: Aussie Ark has created a dedicated insurance population of Long-Nosed Potoroos in a controlled, safe environment. This initiative is designed to protect the species from further decline in the wild and ensure a stable, healthy population for future reintroductions.

  • Reintroduction into Safe Wild Sanctuaries: Aussie Ark is also focused on reintroducing Long-Nosed Potoroos into secure, predator-free sanctuaries where they can thrive without the threat of invasive predators. These sanctuaries provide a safe space for the species to establish a sustainable, wild population.
